Why good dogs still get paid

“When will I not have to use treats anymore?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear at CLEAR Dog Training 😊 The short answer? Probably never entirely — and that’s actually a good thing. Rewards are part of communication. They tell your dog, “Yes! That’s exactly what I wanted.” Whether you’re teaching recalls, loose-lead walking, calm behaviour around visitors or better focus around distractions, reinforcement helps behaviour become stronger and more reliable. Here in Brisbane, it’s quite common for people to worry that using treats in puppy training or dog training will create a dog that only works for food. In reality, rewards are simply part of how dogs — and humans — learn.

When a behaviour is brand new, rewards are usually frequent because your dog is still learning the game. But once your dog truly understands the behaviour, you gradually move to intermittent rewards. Sometimes they earn food, sometimes praise, a toy, a game or simply your attention and interaction. And this is where it gets interesting. Your dog starts to think a bit like a poker player. They know they won’t get rewarded every single time — but there’s always the chance a jackpot could be coming next. That uncertainty actually helps keep behaviour strong and motivated. It’s one of the reasons intermittent reinforcement is so powerful in both animal training and human behaviour.

Reliable behaviour is built through clarity, consistency and reinforcement over time — not by trying to phase rewards out too quickly. One of the biggest mistakes people make is stopping rewards too early. Behaviour that is no longer reinforced can slowly weaken over time, especially once real-world distractions are added. Good dog training isn’t about bribery. It’s about communication, motivation and building a strong relationship with your dog. And yes — even very well-trained dogs still appreciate getting paid occasionally for a job well done.
