Most people think trick training is just about teaching cute party pieces. But experienced trainers know something different. Tricks are one of the easiest ways to build engagement, confidence and enthusiasm in dogs.
When dogs are relaxed and genuinely enjoying themselves, they tend to:
– Try harder
– Offer behaviours more freely
– Learn faster
– Build confidence
– Become more connected to their owner
And that connection matters. Dogs who enjoy learning are usually much easier to train in everyday life as well. At CLEAR Dog Training, we often encourage owners to think of training less as “obedience” and more as learning how to play great games together.
How to teach spin
Hold a treat just in front of your dog’s nose. Slowly guide your hand in a circle so your dog follows the treat around. The moment your dog completes the circle, mark it (“Yes!” or click) and reward. After a few repetitions, start adding the cue word “Spin”. Most dogs learn this one very quickly — and absolutely love it.
How to teach leg weave
Stand with your feet slightly apart. Lure your dog through your legs from behind using a treat. As your dog comes through, switch the treat to your other hand and guide them around the outside of your leg and back through again. Reward each successful weave. Before long, you’ll usually have a happy dog zig-zagging through your legs like a little slalom skier. Keep sessions short, light and enjoyable. Five minutes of fun training will often achieve far more than a long, serious session. Sometimes the very best dog training barely looks like training at all. It just looks like two friends having fun together.
